Rotunda Hospital building Dublin & Gate Theatre images

The  Rotunda maternity hospital located on Parnell street, close to Dublin's city centre. Founded by Bartholomew Mosse (1712-1759) contruction began in 1751 & was completed in 1757 (ref: James Malton's Dublin). The building's architect was Richard Cassels, who also designed Leinster House. At the time it was the largest lying-in hospital in the British Isles.

The Rotunda originally had several public areas for hosting social and fund raising events such as baloon-ascents, as it was a charitable institution & dependent on public donations. The broadsheet poster above advertises one such event on Easter Monday 24th April 1848, with an ascent & parachute jump from the Irish National Baloon "Erin go Brath".

Gate Theatre Dublin
The Gate Theatre, where the supper rooms of the Rotunda were located. The theatre was founded in 1928 by Micheál MacLiammóir & Hilton Edwards.
