Originally built as a short cut to Crow Street, which had a theatre located there, the Ha'penny Bridge first opened in May 1816. A toll fee of one half-penny as charged for crossing and the annual income from the tolls was £329 and 3 shillings. A tidy sum in the 19th century, equivalent to approx £40,000 today.
