James Joyce (1882-1941)- famous Irish writer & poet, was born 2 February 1882 in Rathgar, a South Dublin suburb. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College, a boarding school run by the Jesuit order near Clane Co. Kildare & later in Belvedere College, Dublin. He went on to study at UCD in 1898 & was active in Dublin literary & city theatrical circles. After graduating in 1903 James Joyce departed for Paris to study medicine but returned home months later due to his mothers illness. Following his mothers death he remained in Dublin & in 1904 met Nora Barnacle a young woman from Connemara, with whom he eloped to the continent.
