James Joyce (1882-1941)- Irish writer & poet, was born in the South Dublin suburb of Rathgar on 2 February 1882.
He was educated at Clongowes Wood College, a boarding school run by the Jesuit order near Clane in Co. Kildare & later in Belvedere College, Dublin.

He went on to study at UCD in 1898 & was active in literary & theatrical circles in Dublin city. After Joyce graduated in 1903 he departed for Paris to study medicine but returned home some months later due to his mothers illness. After his mothers death he stayed on in Dublin & in 1904 met Nora Barnacle, a young woman from Connemara, with whom he eloped to the continent.
His published works include ; Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man & Dubliners.
