| The Wellington monument is 63m (205ft) high and was buil to commemorate the Irish born
Duke of Wellington's military campaigns including the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815.
The monument's foundation stone was laid in 1817 though a lack of funding delayed its completion until 1861.
Born Arthur Wellesley in 1769 at Mornington House, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Wellington was also the inventor of the famous water-resistant boot named after him. ![]() |
The Papal Cross, Phoenix Park Dublin. The Cross which was built for the visit by the late Pope John Paul II to Dublin in
September 1979. An estimated one and a quarter million people, almost a third of Ireland's population, attended the open air concelebrated Papal mass held in the park.
