The Emerald Isle

Dublin is one of the most popular tourist cities in the world, the name is synonymous with friendly people, a great atmosphere and, of course, Guinness. Even if you don't like the most famous of Irish drinks, however, there's so much to do in Dublin that if you're considering a holiday this Easter, Dublin should be high up the list.

Ireland has an incredible literary history, and Dublin is right at the heart of that. Authors like Joyce, Shaw, Yeats, and playwrights like Beckett and Oscar Wilde all lived and wrote in the Irish capital and the city is indelibly stamped with their efforts. Today Dublin boasts one of the best arts scenes in the world with a plethora of theatres offering a range of shows.

Dublin is also famous for its art, and perhaps most of all for the Book of Kells a world-famous manuscript produced in the eighth century by Irish monks and housed in Dublin's most famous building, Trinity College. There are countless museums and galleries in Dublin, some focussing on modern art, whilst others boast collections ranging back over four thousand years.

Aside from the museums, theatres and galleries, Dublin has wonderful architecture, and the city has been the scene for many films and television programmes set in the Georgian era. Particularly fine examples are the colleges, but Dublin castle and the Customs House are both definitely worth a look.

Of course, no visit to Dublin is complete without sampling the atmosphere on a night out. The Guinness brewery, whilst not to everyone's tastes, is not to be missed and a pint of Guinness poured in Dublin is completely different to a pint poured anywhere else in the world. Make sure to also check out Temple Bar in an evening, probably the most famous Irish nightspot, it's always busy and boasts a great atmosphere.

When you're looking for a place to stay in Dublin, there are a wide range of options, the city claims to have officially the best hostel in the world, but if you're looking for something a little more upmarket, there's something to cater to all tastes. As with any hotel, a good idea is to check out a site like Octopus Travel that offers reviews of Dublin hotels from people who've actually stayed there, that way you'll know you're getting good value for money before you even step into your room.

Dublin is one of the most popular tourist places on earth, with over 50% of the population under the age of 25 it is youthful and vibrant throughout the year, and even more so if you get the chance to visit when Ireland are playing a home game of Rugby, it's a truly great place to spend a holiday.
